Description

The person you think yourself to be is the result of inattention. Attention, when uncontrolled, spins in patterns, and the mind comes into being. Within the mind are the body and the world, both of which are imaginary. Through the control of attention, the illusion that the world, body, and mind are real is dispelled, and the reality that exists behind them is revealed. This reality is one of pure awareness, in which happiness and peace are normal, and no problems exist. Sensory experience continues to operate, but the perception of being a person, limited in space and time, subject to birth and death, is absent.


In this workshop, I will tell you the story of the severe psychological struggle that led me to the discipline of controlling attention, and how, through patient and diligent application of this discipline, I became centred in peace and happiness – states that, at one point, I feared I'd never experience again.

I will then share with you all you need to know in order to begin practising this discipline. It is very simple, yet, when taken to earnestly, is profound in its effects, and dramatic in its implications.

After that, there will be a time that will be open for questions. About a third of the time we have will be dedicated to this question and answer session.

Some time at the very end will be left empty, for people to meet each other if they so choose, and for anyone who wants to talk to me individually to do so, if they want to.

Future workshops may be extended to include a guided meditation, however, I have decided to forego this for now, to give me a chance to get a sense of timing and responses.

As for what to wear, we will all be sitting on chairs, and no movement to speak of is involved, so everyday clothes will be adequate.

The ultimate purpose of attention-control – which you could also call self-inquiry, awareness-practice, or some other name – is the complete silencing of the mind, and the total transcendence of any notion of volition or personhood. Given this fact, I cannot claim myself to be an absolute master of this discipline; I consider myself to be very much a student, just like you. However, I do believe I have enough understanding and insight to present this subject in a way that is of enormous value to those who hear me do so. I am also confident I am able to create an atmosphere of quiet and calm, conducive to introspection and contemplation.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone who wants to quieten their mind, and experience more peace, happiness, and well-being in their life. No physical or other prerequisites exist. I would like to mention, though, that the viewpoint expressed in this workshop may be very different to the one you are habituated to, and, though I aim to make the subject as intelligible and easy to understand as possible, I also refuse to water it down.

So, if all or any of this has piqued your curiosity, I encourage you to come and participate in an evening that will be, at the very least, very stimulating and interesting, if not transformative and inspiring. At the very least, you will gain some new perspectives on yourself, life, and existence. At best, however, I say that, if you are ripe for it, the message of self-inquiry has the capacity to completely burn up your limited view of yourself, and transform the world in which you live.
