Yoga for Chronic Illness
Event Information
About this Event
Chronic illnesses impact the lives of many people worldwide. There is a growing body of evidence showing that yoga can be an effective way to maintain health and improve wellbeing when living with a chronic illness. However most yoga teachers do not feel well equipped to help a student with debilitating arthritis, chronic pain, or a cancer diagnosis, and nor should they, certainly a 200 hour or even 500 hour teacher training is unlikely to have given them the tools to do so safely, effectively, and in alignment with best practice health care. This is where Yoga Therapists come in - a Yoga Therapist is an experienced yoga teacher who undertakes further study in order to better support people with complex health conditions. Our 800 hour Wisdom Yoga Therapy programme is designed to graduate competent, compassionate, ethical, evidence-based complementary health practitioners who are able to skilfully build a client base as private practitioners, within yoga studios, in health care settings, and in their communities.
Over four weekends, you will learn about conditions including types of arthritis, auto-immune disorders, ageing, trauma, mental health conditions, cardiovascular diseases, types of diabetes, cancer, and palliative care. These conditions will be explored based on scientific literature, lived experiences, and case studies, and you will be guided in preparing classes and courses that will suit people living with such conditions.
Who is this for?
Yoga teachers with at least 1 year teaching experience, who are interested in adding to their knowledge and skills to better serve people in need using all the tools of yoga. This module is part of our 800 hour IAYT accredited Yoga Therapist training programme, and can be taken as a 'stand alone' training for professional development, or as part of your journey to becoming a certified Yoga Therapist.
Not a yoga teacher?
You are still welcome to attend and will not be expected to undertake assessments. We have a limited number of spaces available for interested people from any background. Experience of yoga is essential, but you do not need any special skillset.
