Yarra Valley Water waste to energy facility tour
Yarra Valley Water has constructed a food waste to energy facility utilising anaerobic digestion in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The purpose-built facility provides an environmentally friendly solution for commercial organic waste otherwise destined for landfill. Waste producers, such as markets and food manufacturers, deliver the equivalent of 33,000 tonnes of commercial organic waste to the facility each year, which is used to produce clean renewable energy.
This innovative facility currently generates 25% of Yarra Valley Water’s entire energy needs and is key to achieving its strategy of generating 100% of its electricity requirements through renewable energy by 2025. The facility is a profitable, commercially run operation that is not subsidised and generates multiple benefits in reduced waste to landfill, reduced greenhouse gases, energy cost savings and a revenue stream from waste producers.
The facility is adjacent to Yarra Valley Water’s Aurora sewage and recycled water treatment plant and generates enough energy to power both treatment plants with excess energy (approximately 75% of what is generated) exported back to the electricity grid.
Long pants, longsleeved shirt and closed shoes (preferably safety boots). High-vis vests will be provided.
Free parking is available on the day.
Note: Street signage for the facility says ReWaste.
