What's it   All About?

Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi is a two-day cultural   capability program that supports participants to reflect deeply on their   practice and challenge their world views and assumptions.  It focusses   on history, cultural safety, communication, relationships and partnerships.    The program fosters a genuine appreciation for, and understanding of the   significance of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, country,   history and culture.

Our co-delivery of Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi with   local Elders and community leaders ensures an authentic learning experience   as well as providing an opportunity to establish ongoing relationships.    The success of the program lies in the conversational delivery approach and   the structures that support people to have open and meaningful conversations   and to continue to build their knowledge and understanding through engaging   in reflective practice.

What does   the program cover?

  • Building awareness of   Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture
  • Reflecting an awareness   of own and other cultural realities in work practice
  • Communicating effectively   with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Developing cultural   safety in workplace and professional relationships
  • Working in partnership with   Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities

What our   participants say ..

‘I feel so grateful for   the support of the amazing facilitators and the generous insights provided by   our group’s elders as I strive for cultural integrity’.

- Participant, Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi

‘Powerful, powerful   workshop series. Respectful and knowledgeable facilitators provided a much   needed pathway to learn the true history of our past. I have been inspired   every day to learn more, and believe this series should be compulsory for   all. The most outstanding, meaningful and empowering project proving to   create significant positive change towards the true understanding, respect   and culturally safe practices’.

- Participant, Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi

Facilitators:

Rona Scherer comes from the Yalanji and Mamu peoples of Far North Queensland,   having a strong and active role in her homelands. She comes with diverse   experiences from administration to curating art exhibitions and conducting   workshops and conferences presentations. Rona also sits on the Board of   Mullen Bun Goon for the Mamu Tropical Skywalk in Far North Queensland.

Cultural inclusion and safety within Australia   are on a very long journey.  There is much work to be done within   workforce and with organisations who are seeking to begin those   conversations.  Rona sees her current role as a Workforce Consultant as   her way to support making that cultural shift towards a truly reconciled and   progressive nation.

Rona will be joined by local Gubbi Gubbi Elder   Kerry Neil

Yarn Up Tok Blo Yumi content aligns with CHCDIV002 – Promote Aboriginal and Torres   Strait Islander Cultural Safety.   Participants may be able to use evidence collected in this program in   an RPL process.
