Y11 Chemistry: Mastering Chemical Bonding [Module 1]
Event Information
Description
Just finished Term 1 of Year 11 Chemistry and found it challenging?
In this HSC Mastery Holiday Workshop, we're going to help you master Chemical Bonding from Module 1 of the new HSC Chemistry syllabus!
In this 3 workshop during the school holidays on Tuesday 16th April from 1-4pm, our Head of Sciences, Adrian will help you:
- Master ionic lattices in terms of lattice energy
- Understand metallic bonding in terms of the atomic theory learned earlier in the module!
- Use your understanding of atoms (electronegativity, size etc.) to explain and describe covalent bonding
- Practice with drawing out Lewis Structures for molecules in isolation and molecules in the context of reactions
- Learn how to master predictions of molecular geometry using the positions of bonding electrons and non-bonding electrons
Why is it important to master this now?
Often a topic that students struggle with is the basis of bonding. In order to perform well in HSC Chemistry, students must have the foundation set out and mastered. Tackling any knowledge gaps early on will allow students to progress easily through this course
Although it is not directly addressed, chemical bonding is an underlying concept throughout your Year 11 and 12 studies which students will be required to apply constantly. So mastering how to differentiate the bonding types will help you ace your first exam and create a strong foundation for the entire HSC course!
Finally, you will also be spending a very large amount of time drawing covalent bonds in Year 12! Study smart and learn this section well to make your learning smoother later on in the course when you’re juggling things like Depth Studies!
The Key Outcomes
- Students will learn to differentiate between bonding types and determine the bonding nature of substances from the periodic table
- Students will also apply this knowledge to the bonding of compounds
- Learn to apply how bonding types determine the chemical and physical strength of substances
- Explore the differences between intermolecular and intramolecular bonding and their impact on chemical structures
- Learn how to determine molecular geometry
What’s included?
- 3-hour workshop run by an incredible teacher!
- Small personalised class - so you're not one of 100 students in a big lecture room. We cap the sessions at 15 students maximum :)
- Lesson notes and practice questions to help you master the Atomic Structure!
Investment: $120 for 3 hours of support
Date: Tuesday 16th April
Time: 1-4pm
