Event description

Description

Innovation is essential in the building and WSUD industry. Observing the successes, failures, benefits and challenges best informs the future delivery and implementation of new technologies.

Join us on Wednesday the 29th November for a 3 hour tour of two unique sites: the Inkerman Oasis and the St Kilda Surf Lifesaving Club.

Completed 15 years ago, the Inkerman Oasis project set new benchmarks in WSUD and ESD at its time, with innovative greywater recycling, stormwater treatment and a suite of other sustainability features. It was also the first project in Australia to provide community housing under a private development agreement, with a partnership between the City of Port Phillip and Inkerman Developments. Williams Boag Architects were the lead architects of the project, with Eco-Villages and South East Water providing consultancy and management respectively of the water recyling system.

The project received international awards and recognition, including the United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Awards (2000), the Stockholm Partnership for Sustainable Cities Award (2002), and an international Greenhouse Building Nomination (2002).

But what happened beyond the design phase? Did the award winning design translate into operational results? What issues were encountered and how can we, as designers, learn from their pioneering journey? We will meet with the building manager to view the site, discuss its current operations, and learn of it's interesting and eventful journey.

Following this, we will visit the St Kilda Surf Lifesaving Cub. Designed by Robert Simeoni and completed in 2016, the development aimed to minimise its environmental impact while meeting its needs as a community facility. Featuring water tanks, solar systems, recycling and materials selected on their ESD values. Simeoni also designed the neighbouring Stokehouse redevelopment, Australia's first Green Star rated restaurant.
