Event description
Explore ways in which you can use language to achieve clear and confident academic writing in your thesis.

About this Event

These two sessions will help you identify and practise some of the more troublesome elements of English grammar and expression. We will examine how language works to do the things you have to do in a thesis. The focus of the workshops will not be on teaching grammar, but on exploring the ways in which you can use language to achieve clear and confident academic writing in your thesis.

You will be encouraged to bring a small sample of your writing to work on.

1. Clarity and focus: the building blocks of effective thesis writing.

This session will look at academic writing conventions and effective use of grammar to achieve greater focus in your writing. Topics will include:

  • How to use tense effectively to position your argument
  • Effective paragraph structures
  • Establishing overall coherence and cohesion in your thesis
  • Tips for effective editing
  • Resources for effective writing

2. Critique and Analysis: developing voice and authority in your writing.

This session will look and language strategies for projecting an authoritative and analytical voice in your writing. We will cover:

  • Claims and counterclaims
  • Language for developing nuance
  • Eliminating redundancy to produce ‘tight’ writing
  • Resources for effective writing

Why should I attend?

After this session, you will be more confident about your language use. You will be able to identify some common grammatical moves in academic English and use those elements to create a more critical and polished style. Just as importantly, you will be left with a resource bank that you can use to improve your language use.
