Writing workshop with Sarah Nicholson, KSP 2017 Emerging Writer-in-Residence

Writing the Heroine

Beginning with Joseph Campbell’s classic approach to the hero’s journey, we will be looking at the hero and the heroine in classic literature. We will be exploring the issues for the mythic heroine on her inner and outer journeys. Finally, we will be looking at contemporary examples of heroines whose journey’s have been remembered, rewritten or reinvented. Along the way we will be doing writing exercises that respond to various aspects of the heroine’s journey.

Workshop features a reading and extended recommended reading list.

OBJECTIVES / EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understanding of the classic hero/ine’s journey and its influence on narrative.
  • Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues for heroine’s
  • Strategies for re-imagining, remembering and reinventing the heroine.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This is targeted towards emerging writers but it suitable for any level.


About the Facilitator

Dr Sarah Nicholson is the author of The Evolutionary Journey of Woman: From the Goddess to Integral Feminism. She has a doctorate in feminist philosophy and teaches writing, and studies in literature, and religion at the universities of Newcastle, Wollongong and Western Sydney. She was the recipient of an Ian Potter fellowship for literature, and was writer in residence at the Three Islands Writers and Translators Centre on Rhodes, Greece.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is a bus stop directly outside the Centre on Old York Road. The Centre is located on a residential street and looks like any other house: look for the 'Katharine’s Place' wooden plaque sign and bright green letterbox out front. Parking is available in the brick driveway and in front of the hedge, also on the upper gravel level (to the right of the house) and along the street. Overflow parking can be found down the gravel driveway to the immediate left of the house (look for the No Thoroughfare sign); please drive down here slowly.

What should I bring to the event?
Bring an exercise book and pen or pencil, and water bottle if desired. Laptops/tablets also welcome.
