WRITING FOR THE MIDDLE

With Samantha Wheeler

Transform your writing to craft a story children will love.

Middle-Grade Fiction is of growing interest to both writers and publishers, but what makes it different to writing picture books or young adult fiction? The proposed workshop looks at helping emerging writers unlock the common traps experienced when embarking on writing for this challenging, but rewarding genre. Learn how to tailor the voice, character, plot and dialogue of their stories to best suit middle-grade fiction. How many points of view are suitable for this age group and how many sub-plots can be introduced without over complicating the story? How many characters will make their prose sing? This workshop will explore the ways in which writers can mould their craft to best suit our young readers.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this workshop, participants will have a fundamental understanding of how to do the following:

  • Tailor their writing to suit middle-grade fiction.

  • Use the appropriate number of characters and points of view for the genre.

  • Use dialogue that suits young characters (rather than adult dialogue for young people).

  • Use plot/sub-plot structures that are targeted towards young readers.

  • Utilise strong verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and sentence length for middle-grade fiction.

Format:

This is a craft workshop for writers of all levels. More information on program formats and level definitions can be found here.

About Samantha:

Samantha Wheeler studied Agriculture, worked with dairy farmers, and taught science, before writing her first children’s book, inspired by koalas, in 2011. Her books, which include Smooch & Rose, Wombat Warriors, Mister Cassowary, and Turtle Trackers have been shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards, the Readings Book Prize, The Wilderness Society Environmental Award and the Royal Zoological Society, Whitley Commendation. Her most recent story, Everything I’ve Never Said, was inspired by her youngest daughter, who has Rett Syndrome and can’t talk. Samantha hopes her books will inspire everyone to speak up and make a difference.
