Writing as Therapy: Making Meaning of 2020 - Saturday 19 December
Event Information
About this Event
Was 2020 a sh*t show for you?
Feeling like you just lost an entire year? Had all these plans that you never followed through on? Or maybe you really liked 2020. Either way, this event is for anyone who wishes to gain more clarity, self-compassion and confidence in preparation for 2021.
I'm running several small group workshops that are designed to help you use writing as therapy. Often, we rush from one thing to the next, never stopping to pause and make meaning of what just happened.
I can guarantee you, 2020 was filled with plenty of life lessons. Your biggest fears, insecurities and habits were exposed. Your relationships went through their most make-or-break obstacles ever. Your career and goals were tested to the extreme. You reassessed your values and priorities.
Each of these lessons hold invaluable information that you can leverage and use to guide you in the next year (to ten years!) of your life.
About the facilitator:
I'm a writer, narrative therapist and Australian Counselling Association-accredited counsellor with 10 years experience in storytelling. Working as a journalist, I witnessed first-hand the power of a story in influencing audiences.
Just as a news story influences what we believe, the stories that we tell ourselves internally (our inner dialogue, or self-talk) influence what we believe to be true about ourselves - whether we're a failure, a success, beautiful, undesirable, intelligent, untalented...
In this workshop I've combined key concepts from narrative therapy, communications, creative writing and art therapy to create writing activities ('journal prompts') that help you connect with the wisdom you gained from 2020 so that you can put it into practice in 2021 and beyond.
About the workshop:
The online Zoom workshop runs for 90 minutes and groups will be kept small so there is time to ask questions and share your writing whenever you feel inspired.
Expect a casual, conversational vibe - although I'll be structuring the session around 2-3 writing activities (or 'journal prompts'), which I'll walk you through, step-by-step, providing 2-10 minute writing intervals to trial the exercises. This will also allow you to ask questions and get clearer on the activities before you go away and journal solo.
Make sure you're purchasing the ticket for the correct date you wish to attend!

PAY IT FORWARD:
Want to donate a ticket to someone who can't afford it? Many of my clients are part of the LGBTQI+ community, people of colour, neurodiverse and/or living with a chronic illness or disability. As a therapist living with huge privilege—being white, semi able-bodied, tertiary educated and cis-gendered—I invite others in similar positions to help me advocate for positive change by 'paying it forward' (among other ways). Contact me to arrange ticket donations.
IMPORTANT, MUST READ:
This workshop is not a substitute for counselling. It also is not group therapy, so please be advised that this is not the space to share deeply personal content. I'm a registered, practicing counsellor but cannot respond to your shares with the level of care and support I provide in my 1:1 therapy sessions.
I do not tolerate homophobia, racism, ableism, sexism or any form of prejudice.
I am running these workshops from Whadjuk Boodja, home to the Noongar people. I acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of this land on which I work and pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
