Event description

Description

Celebrate World Wildlife Day by attending a local speaker forum. The day will have a Birds and Bats theme, with Dr Holly Parsons from Birdlife Australia and Dr Martin Schulz, a local zoologist with a keen interest in bats speaking at this event. There will be time for Q&A and an opportunity to hear about how you can get involved in Council's citizen science initiatives.

Dr Holly Parsons has been involved in Birds in Backyards on and off since 1999, and now co-manages the program. Holly has always had an interest in birds and ecology which led her to the field of avian urban ecology at University. During her PhD Holly looked at the impact of urbanisation on Superb Fairy-wrens. Since her research was completed Holly has moved into environmental education and runs several Birds in Backyards projects, which helps her to combine scientific research with communication of the importance of biodiversity to the wider community.

Dr Martin Schulz has been interested in bats since he was four years old. He completed a PhD with Southern Cross University on the ecology of two rare and poorly known insectivorous bats: the Golden-tipped Bat and Flute-nosed Bat. Martin has been involved with fauna surveys, monitoring and research across Australia, Alaska, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. Currently he is working on a number of other rare species in NSW, including the Broad-headed Snake on the Woronora Plateau and the Mountain Pygmy-possum and Smoky Mouse in Kosciuszko National Park.

Morning tea will be provided.

Wingecarribee Shire Council is hosting this event, through its Habitat for Wildlife program, which encourages residents to make their backyard gardens more wildlife friendly, and which is supported by Your Environment Levy.
