Event description

Description

Come and celebrate World Water Day with us at Field of Mars. You will get the opportunity to participate in a range of activities that show how vital a healthy waterway is to supporting biodiversity. Conduct some water quality tests on our local creek, plant some seedlings as part of the bush regeneration program and search for water dragons.

Bring: Please bring a water bottle and wear long pants, a hat and wear sturdy enclosed shoes (you will not be able to participate in all activities if you are wearing sandals or thongs).

Activities will start at 9.00am sharp. Participants will be split into 3 groups and will rotate every hour between 3 different activities – Water Quality Testing, An introduction to Bushcare and a Citizen Science Water Dragon Survey.

Refreshments will be supplied and a light lunch will be provided for participants.

We will break for lunch from 12noon - 12:45pm

Activity 1: Dragons of Sydney Citizen Science Survey

Dragon of Sydney invites you to become a citizen scientist for World Water Day! We’ll be collecting data about the local Eastern Water Dragon population in Field of Mars Reserve. With your help, we will gather data to inform our understanding of whether water dragon populations are increasing, decreasing or staying the same in urban areas. You will also learn all about water dragons and why they are such interesting creatures to research.

Activity 2: Introduction to Bushcare

This hands-on bush regeneration activity will focus on what we can do to help restore our local bushland. With a pair of gloves, a bush regeneration tool pouch, loppers and saws help the local bushcare group to regenerate the area.

Activity 3: Water Quality Monitoring

NSW Waterwatch is a citizen science program based around water quality and catchment education. During today’s activity, community members will conduct water quality tests to assess the creek. Whilst being guided through these tests, participants will learn the importance of catchment management, water quality and the impact that pollution has on the Dragons and other biodiversity.
