Event description

ForestLearning, a program of Forest and Wood Products Australia, in conjunction with the World Forestry Center’s Rick Zenn, are pleased to invite participants to attend the first Australian adaptation of the internationally renowned “International Educators Institute (IEI) program.

Participants are invited from professionals working in forestry, wood processing and products, education, communications, government, natural resource management, universities, schools and more who wish to advance effective communications, teaching and learning about the interrelated social, economic and environmental challenges facing the earth’s forests, and how this relates to an Australian sustainable forest and wood system.

About the course
For the first time out of the USA to deliver this program, Rick Zenn, Senior Fellow at World Forestry Center. will be facilitating a 2-day program in conjunction with Vic Forests’ Liz Langford, and other Australian alumni of the Oregon program.

The World Forestry Center International Educators Institute is the premier professional development program for people in forestry, wood processing, education, research, natural resource management and strategic communication who are committed to advancing effective teaching and learning about the world’s forests and wood industry. The residential leadership program was founded in 1996 by Rick Zenn, and has more than 250 distinguished alumni in government, business, NGOs, universities, and schools working in 43 countries and 36 states of America.

Outcomes for participants
Combining content-rich, hands-on experiences outdoors with an exchange of best practices in forest and wood education, Australia’s own “International Educators Institute” seeks to advance effective teaching and learning about Australian forests in the context of global systems. User-friendly educational materials and media along with individual and small group exercises, will allow participants to capture and share their learning experience with colleagues, organisations and communities at home.

Enjoy guided tours through a variety of forest types planted within Canberra’s National Arboretum as we share different perspectives on teaching and learning and sustainable forestry practices, effective communication and hands-on activity strategies, using contexts of sustainable forestry and wood products within schools and community groups, forest conservation, biodiversity, and climate change. See the forest with new eyes, top to bottom, with scientists and forestry workers who have previously attended the International Education Institute program in Oregon and are passionate to share their learnings within an Australian context. Develop your individual or organisation’s skills in communication and education to more effectively partner with schools and communicate to the broader community.

Can you cater for my Dietary requirements?

We have provided some special dietary choices in the registration process. Please ensure you choose the most appropriate for your needs. While we have created some choices we can not however cater for people with severe food allergies.

People with severe food allergies can react to tiny traces of certain food types inadvertently present in ingredients or on cooking utensils.

Our light meals, morning and afternoon teas are prepared by various caterers and each sources food and ingredients from many different suppliers. It is not feasible to test or control every ingredient and utensil used in preparing every meal to the level of being able to guarantee there will be no traces of an allergen substance present.

We also realise that some participants have allergies so severe they can react to the presence of tiny quantities of food in the air. It is not feasible to exclude these minute traces from the Event, since we cannot control what is brought at the Event by other participants or left behind by other Events. We therefore, advise that we are unable to provide allergen-free meals and/or an allergen-free environment at any of Events. We do have a selection of special meal options available, however please note that we are not able to cater for individual requests for specific food items to be included or excluded from any of our meals.

Self catering

If you require absolute certainty of an allergen-free meal, you're welcome to bring your own meal to the Event. However, because of limited facilities, we are not able to heat meals that you bring with you.
