The Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria found that elder abuse is an under-reported form of family violence that warrants particular attention and a tailored response. This breakfast event will explore the Victorian Government’s family violence reform agenda and implications for older people and elder abuse. The session will showcase initiatives underway across the state and explore ideas for making sure that older people receive the support they need.

Speakers will include:

Sharon Knight MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Human Services

Sharon chairs the Victorian Government elder abuse advisory group and will present a summary of the Royal Commission into Family Violence findings on elder abuse and provide an update on the Victorian government initiatives.

Sue Clifford APM, Chief Executive Officer, Family Safety Victoria (FSV)

Sue will outline the role of FSV in delivering the Victorian Government’s family violence reform agenda and its work in responding to family violence in all contexts and environments. Sue will explore how the family violence service system can work alongside government and the integrated model of care for elder abuse to better prevent and respond to elder abuse in Victoria.

Gerard Mansour, Commissioner for Senior Victorians and Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention

Gerard will outline the needs of older people experiencing elder abuse and what else is needed to assist older people.

Dean McWirther, Assistant Commissioner, Family Violence Command, Victoria Police

Dean will discuss the reforms being undertaken by Victoria Police to implement recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence, with a focus on how these recommendations will assist in improving policing responses to elder abuse
