Event description

Description

Talking to the media can be a daunting task! If you’re keen to share your research more widely and reach broader audiences, however, media such as TV or radio can be excellent platforms to do so. Your interview responses can influence how the news will be reported. This interactive workshop provides participants with practical, hands-on experience in doing a mock interview, and gaining insight into media interviewing do’s and don’ts. Please note: it is assumed that you have attended the Opening Panel in the morning.

FACILITATORS:

Kathryn Powley is a senior media officer at La Trobe. She spent 16 years working as a print and online journalist where she interviewed politicians, celebrities, scientists, everyday people and hardest of all – children. For the past two years Kathryn has been working in universities helping researchers tell their stories to mainstream audiences. Her job at La Trobe includes crafting media releases to entice journalists to be interested in research, slashing jargon and translating scholarly journal papers into plain English for a non-academic audience, connecting reporters with the right expert to answer their questions, and providing media training for academic staff.

Dragana Mrkaja is a journalist and Media Officer at La Trobe University. Dragana has been a producer with 3AW radio, working across all programs, and has also worked with SBS and The Australian.

Who should attend?

All La Trobe researchers, regardless of career stage, are welcome to attend!
