Event description

Description

This field day is about giving you the practical skills to manage weeds effectively on your farm. Learn how to boost small farm productivity and diversity by understanding the biology of weeds and why they do so well in your environment. What can the weeds tell us about soil, land use and your paddocks? This is an opportunity to learn about weeds and why they love your place.

Take part in a paddock walk, bring samples for plant/weed identification, talk about control options and how to manage your land after weed removal. We will be looking at weed control options including organic methods, other methods of removal and grazing as a tool. You will also have the opportunity learn about safe and effective herbicide use as a control option, including spray equipment, types of sprays and timing of spraying for weed removal. This is an opportunity to put your property weed planning into practice and build your practical skills.

Alison Elvin from Natural Capital Pty Ltd will lead the field day with her inspiring take on land management. Alison is a local grazier and former organic farmer who is passionate about creating productive, resilient and adaptive agricultural systems that are based on healthy soils, high-quality water and bio-diversity conservation. For more than two decades her work with rural communities in southern Australia has focused on how to integrate sustainable and resilient production strategies with on-farm landscape repair in a practical, cost-effective and meaningful manner. With a wealth of practical and theoretical knowledge from both personal and professional experience, Alison will guide you on your way to implementing these skills at your place.

Neville Plumb, Biosecurity Officer with the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council will discuss the use of herbicides as a management tool, demonstrate some equipment that can be used and talk about safe herbicide use. Neville has over 20 years’ experience as a council Weeds Officer and has devoted his life to helping people understand weeds and manage them effectively to create more diverse and productive environments.
