Event description

Description

Working with Watercolour
With Nicolette Benjamin Black

Thursday > 10am – 12:30pm

28 February – 11 April (no class 28 March)

Students will explore wonderful watercolours and some Australian artists, aiming to produce a small painting at the end of each class. Every week we will look at an Australian artist and study their use of colour and what devices they used to create.

Content >

Week 1 (28 Feb)
Artist of the week: Tom Roberts. Using a basic colour wheel, we will create and mix colours to form secondary and tertiary colours and explore tints, and some watercolour tricks to enhance your work.

Week 2 (7 Mar)
Artist of the week: E. Phillips Fox. We will look at the sketches that Fox made, and his use of light and dark and how to apply this idea in watercolour.

Week 3 (14 Mar)
Artist of the week: Ethel Carrick. Ethel was Phillips Fox’s wife, and also a wonderful Australian painter. We will explore the wonderful effect of being in North Africa on the vibrant colours of Carrick’s work.

Week 4 (21 Mar)
Artist of the week: Clarice Beckett. The way Clarice Beckett saw the world is fascinating, in hazy, blurred and often muted tones. We will experiment with these concepts.

Week 5 (4 Apr)
Artist of the week: Fred Williams. Jumping forward in time, we will examine Williams’ passion for the Australian landscape as seen from above (one of my favourite views too!) Williams often worked in gouache on paper; we will examine these, and make a work inspired by his ideas.

Week 6 (11 Apr)
Artist of the week: John Wolseley. A contemporary artist who mostly works in watercolour, found ochres and charcoal and often damaged paper. Experiment with some natural ochre as well as our watercolours.
