Event description
Working with Reluctant Clients: Skills Development

About this Event

Reluctant clients provide challenges for the helping professional. This course will develop participants’ macro and micro skills in dealing with clients who seem reluctant and/or resistant to change in a wide range of settings.

Not everybody who attends agencies wants to be there or is clear about why. Reluctance and resistance are common issues faced by caseworkers and counsellors. This practical course provides opportunity to identify the key factors around reluctance and resistance, and to develop macro and micro skills for working with clients on these issues.

Course content covers:

  • Theories and frameworks of reluctance, resistance, avoidance and non-participation.
  • Issues for specific client groups including: children, young people and those with organic and acquired brain injury and clients impacted by trauma, substance misuse and those who are non voluntary clients.
  • Macro skills and micro skills for establishing and building relationships.
  • Role-plays and vignettes to embed the knowledge and skills learnt.

Your facilitators:

Adam Peaty

Adam Peaty has worked as a social worker with families and children for 26 years. He has been working in private practice for the past 17 years providing assessments, consultation, supervision, mentoring and training. He has extensive experience in providing complex assessments with clients in which determining the impact of mental health problems and substance use are key to formulating appropriate intervention and treatment plans for participants. Adam has many years of practice in working with clients where issues of reluctance or resistance have been key issues to engage with.

Gail Green

Gail Green has been a social worker for over forty years. Most of her work has been with trauma survivors and with depression and anxiety. She has worked with a wide range of clients including prisoners and people with life experience of mental health issues and most recently worked with survivors speaking to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Gail understands many clients’ reluctance to open up areas of distress and how difficult it is for many to change old patterns. She also supervises other workers in the drug and alcohol field and develops trauma informed policy.
