Working with people with mental health conditions in the AOD sector

This one (1) day workshop for alcohol and other drug workers aims to develop a foundation for working with people with mental health presentations in the AOD sector. It will enable participants to assess and recognise mental health symptoms, and understand the range of treatment options available to people with mental health conditions seeking help from AOD services.
At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

recognise the various mental health conditions that commonly occur in the AOD sector

describe the prevalence of co-occurring disorders

complete a mental state and risk assessment and understand implications for treatment

describe various models for service provision for co-occurring disorders
-
describe a range of referral pathways for people to access appropriate mental health care
-
describing evidence-based, effective treatment options for co-occurring disorders
Frank Hughes is a mental health nurse with a Masters in Mental Health Science and has extensive clinical and workforce development experience in the mental health sector with a speciality in youth mental health. Frank has taught in the Masters of Youth Mental Health course at the University of Melbourne and currently coordinates the Co-occuring disorders subject in the Masters of Addictive Behaviours through Monash University. As well as being a senior educator at Turning Point he also works part-time clinically as a private provider with headspace.
Sandra Roeg has over 20 years experience in the AOD eduction and training and over 20 years of clinical experience in the AOD sector supported by a background in psychiatric nursing, psychotherapy and mental health sciences. Sandra has been instrumental in the development and delivery of training to the AOD sector in Victoria as part of the minimum qualification strategy and also to higher education undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She had the primary training responsibility for the national dissemination of PsyCheck, training in the mental health screening tool and brief mental health interventions for AOD workers funded by the Department of Health and Ageing.
Who should register? Victorian DHHS funded AOD workers new to their role and/or those looking to refresh and update existing knowledge.
Please note that your registration will not be accepted if your organisation is not DHHS funded.
Lunch: A light lunch including a vegetarian selection is provided on the day.

Turning Point is located at 110 Church Street, on the corner of Church Street and Tweedie Place. Entrance is via the front of the building, to the right of the Skoda car dealership. Please take the lift to the first floor and visit reception.

There is very limited 2 hour street parking available in the area.
Cancellation Policy:
This workshop is a free event, however if your circumstances change please log into your Eventbrite account and cancel your registration or alternatively email tp@turningpoint.org.au no later than 7 days prior to advise of your inability to attend.
If notification is not received within this time frame a fee of $50 will be charged as per invoice details at the time of registration.
