Working with Diverse Communities in the Perinatal Period
Overview
Join us for a free 90 minute professional development session!
The perinatal period is a time of profound change, vulnerability, and opportunity. For families from diverse cultural, linguistic, and social backgrounds, navigating health and mental health systems can present unique challenges. This interactive training equips health and mental health professionals with a robust overview of intersectional practice along with knowledge, skills, and practical tools to provide inclusive, culturally responsive care during pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. Participants will explore how identity, culture, and systemic inequities intersect to shape perinatal experiences, and will leave with strategies to strengthen trust, communication, and support for families from all walks of life.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand intersectionality and how overlapping identities (e.g., culture, language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality) influence perinatal health and wellbeing.
- Recognise barriers that diverse communities may face in accessing equitable perinatal care and mental health support.
- Apply culturally responsive practices to build trust and foster meaningful engagement with families.
- Use practical tools and frameworks to adapt care approaches for different cultural and community contexts.
- Reflect on personal biases and systemic inequities to strengthen inclusive practice and advocacy in perinatal care.
