About this Event

‘Lino & Woodblock Jigsaw Prints’ with Kathryn Orton.

Please find below all the information you need regarding workshop attendance.

Born in Orange NSW, Kathryn Orton studied Graphic Design and worked as a graphic artist for many years. She studied Fine Arts at West Wollongong TAFE and then gained a Bachelor of Creative Arts with distinction, from the University of Wollongong. From 1987 to 2011 she taught Fine Arts for TAFE NSW, Illawarra Institute at Wollongong West, Goulburn and Southern Highlands campuses. Kathryn continues to teach workshops and short courses privately. Kathryn lives and works in Wollongong. Recurring themes in her work are sourced from her immediate environment and include vernacular architecture, trees, things to do with the sea and Port Kembla and other ideas and subjects around domestic life. Kathryn exhibited her work at Legge Gallery, Redfern while it was open 1991-2009, and has had work displayed in major national and state exhibitions. Artist residencies include Wollongong City Gallery 1994; Yirrkala, North East Arnhem Land 1996; the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts, Greece 2007; and Hill End in Murray’s Cottage 2012 and 2015.

Workshop overview:

Carving and cutting up lino and woodblocks, printing, reworking, rearranging and overprinting to create complex and playful multi-coloured prints.

• Kathryn will supply woodblocks (3mm Luan ply…same thickness as Silkcut lino) to add other related images. Four to six prints each will be built up in overlapping layers of multiple colours.

• Kathryn will supply woodblocks, printing inks, and some rollers.

• You will be supplied with 2 sheets Hahnemuhle 300gsm printing paper and A3 cartridge for proofing. (If you need more printing paper we have it for sale at the studio).

What you should bring:

• Decide on a theme for your own prints and develop images to work with over the weekend.'

• Bring some already carved lino blocks on your theme if you have them.

• Ideas & sketches for creating the image.

• Art journal for note taking

• Morning Tea,Lunch, your own cup, hand sanitiser, disposable gloves and a mask if you want to wear one.

You will need to wear closed in shoes while working in the studio for work health/ safety reasons.

COVID 19 restrictions and rules must be adhered to. ( These are available on the TMS website and will be emailed to you prior to the event).

It is essential if you are unwell on the day of the workshop that you do not attend under any circumstances. You will, if your absence is due to Covid 19 concerns, be given a credit for an equivalent value workshop. Please refer to the Covid 19 Management Plan on our website www.themakersstudio.org.au
