Event Details

This program will be led by an experienced female coach with a personal and professional understanding of trauma and mental health.

Please note that our coaches volunteer their time and all proceeds go directly towards funding our programs.

Dates

The program will run for 6 weeks, starting on 8th February 2020.

What is jiu-jitsu?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting.

BJJ is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.

BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defence situations.

Who are these sessions suitable for?

These sessions are female-only (transgender welcome), and for people who align with one or more of the points below:

– You are 18 years or over
– You have been diagnosed with mental ill-health
– You have experienced any form of trauma and are looking to regain confidence or feel empowered
– You are not comfortable training with or around males
– You are unsure of how much physical contact you are comfortable with but would like to give it a go
– You are looking to support or train with an enrolled friend
– You are looking to find a new hobby and a social community to be part of

You don’t have to have experienced trauma to join these sessions and we are welcoming of all backgrounds, cultures and religious beliefs.

What to wear

For our 6-week course, our sessions will be conducted in everyday clothes. We recommend wearing comfortable sports trousers that don’t restrict your movement and a slim-fitting top so it doesn’t get caught on anything.

Wearing a rash guard is recommended if you own one. No shoes are allowed on the mat, so all training will be barefoot. Please bring a pair of thongs to wear when not on the mat.

More information

Further information will be supplied to participants before the program starts. If you have any questions before then, feel free to email claire@grappleisle.com.

The location will be provided after enrolment. Please note that numbers are limited.

Organiser

Grapple Isle

In short, Grapple Isle is an advocate of jiu-jitsu, ambassador of mental health and dedicated provider of specialised, trauma-informed jiu-jitsu and self-defence programs in Tasmania.

But it’s so much more than that.

Along with promoting and sponsoring Tasmanian martial arts events, we are continuously working to raise the profile of jiu-jitsu and increase awareness and participation in the sport on the island.

We are an all-inclusive community and our Facebook member-only forum connects grapplers from across the state so they can engage in conversation, get advice or recommendations, share news and promotions and let people know about upcoming competitions, seminars and open mats.
