Day 2 (24 Nov 18), Queenstown to Monowai Cabins

7-10 hours hiking - Challenging.

We will be collected from our accommodation at 7.00am. It’s a stunning drive south towards Te Anau. We begin our first hike of the trip to Luxmore Hut on the Kepler Track, a challenging climb passing beneath towering limestone bluffs and through mountain and silver beech forests. From the tree line you will get tremendous views of lakes Te Anau and Manapouri. Te Anau basin is on one side, and the Murchison and Kepler Mountains on the other. From the tree line it’s another 45 minutes to the Luxmore Hut, which sits at 1085 meters above sea level. For the keen hikers an extra 30 minutes climbing will get you to the summit of Luxmore Peak. Return via the same track back down to the lake. Tonight’s accommodation is at Monowai.

Accommodation: Monowai Cabins. Includes lunch and dinner.

Day 3 (25th Nov 18 - Monowai to Green Lake Hut (or camp)

7 hours hiking

We prepare for our first overnight hike at the cabins this morning, before taking the short drive up to Borland Saddle. Beech forest aligns the track before we ascend onto the gentle tussock peaks of the Hunter Range, where we gradually climb to Mt Burns. From here we navigate along the tops, enjoying striking views of the granite peaks of southern Fiordland across the dark colours of Green Lake. Tarns (small mountain lakes) are dotted along the route and wild deer are prominent in the area. Eventually we drop down into beech forest from the tops and link up with the southern shore of Green Lake, which leads us to a cosy mountain hut. Feel free to take a dip in the frigid waters of the lake before settling down in front of the hut fire for the night.

Accommodation: Green Lake Hut (or camp). Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

* Green Lake Hut is shared with the public. There may be 2-4 others hikers to meet! We will explain what the huts are like on the trip.

Day 4 (26th Nov 18 - Green Lake Hut (or camp) – Wanaka

3 hours hiking

Take it easy this morning and enjoy this remote setting before we hike back to the road following along the lake then through beech forest and areas of alpine tussock. Then sit back this afternoon and enjoy the drive to Wanaka. Arrive Wanaka late afternoon.

Accommodation: Wanaka Top 10. Includes breakfast and lunch, dinner at groups own cost (Wanaka)

Day 5 (27th Nov 18 - Wanaka – Mt Aspiring National Park

7-8 hours hiking

Head off to Makarora and then begin our hike in the spectacular Mt Aspiring National Park, on the Gillespie Pass Hike. Discover spectacular mountain scenery, alpine vegetation and river valleys filled with silver beech. We can start todays hike further up the road from the Blue Pools area so a jetboat is not required. Hike up the Young Valley to Young Hut.

Accommodation: Young Hut. Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 6 (28th Nov 18 - Mt Aspiring National Park)

7-8 hours hiking

Depart from Young Hut and hike up the valley which leads (rather abruptly) to the impressive 1490m Gillespies Pass. From here the view is bound to impress –the ice carved peak of Mount Alba dominates the skyline. Descend via Gillespie’s stream to the Siberia valley and hut.

Accommodation: Siberia Hut. Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 7 (29th Nov 18 - Mt Aspiring National Park – Queenstown)

4 hours hiking

Head down the valley - sidling above the Siberia River. We gain spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and waterfalls of the lower Siberia Valley. A jet boat picks us up at the confluence of the Siberia and Wilkin Valleys and carries us on a thrilling 45 minute journey downstream to Makarora. Head back to Queenstown where our Hiking New Zealand guide departs and the guided portion of this trip is finished. Check out is before 10am at Pinewood Lodge on the 20th November.

Accommodation: Pinewood Lodge. Includes breakfast and lunch. (Dinner at groups on cost out in Queenstown)

Walking clothes: New Zealand’s weather is changeable and we can experience extremely cold weather at any time of year, especially in the mountains. Our huts/camps vary in altitude from sea level to over 1000 metres. It is necessary to have warm clothing. Jeans are not suitable for hiking.

Raincoat (goretex or similar)

Hiking boots (or hiking shoes)

Spare lightweight shoes or sandals

Shorts or lightweight trousers (preferably quick-dry)

Short-sleeved shirt x 2 (quick-dry, polypropylene or wool)

Socks (we suggest 3 pairs) of merino socks only.

Togs (swimming costume for the keen!)

Thermal tops and bottoms and warm hat

Towel (lightweight travel towels are great)

*Please also pack a spare pair of walking shoes.

Spare clothing: Comfortable clothes for non hiking days. Spare clothing can be left in the secure trailer when we are away on the hikes, so don’t worry about the extra weight – ensure you have enough warm items. Note: there are only limited opportunities to do laundry during a tour, so quick drying clothing is an advantage. Weather can change rapidly in the locations we hike so layers of clothing is ideal.
