Event description

Description

Sometimes, you need to experience a broken system from the inside, to clearly see a way forward to fix it.

But how to you share your vision – before the broken system breaks you?

Helen Parker was lucky. Aged just 20, she faced an unplanned pregnancy, mid-way through her university degree, with no job, no family support, and nowhere to call home.

Despite the challenges, she wanted to have her baby – and her determination put the young Melbourne mother on a path for transforming countless lives in her local community.

Navigating complex and uncoordinated health care and social support systems for pregnant and new mothers, Helen was fortunate to find the encouragement she needed through a range of community organisations.

But her search also showed her cavernous gaps in services, and huge numbers of overwhelmed women falling through them.

These frustrating and alienating experiences stayed with her, and Helen knew there must be a way to support and empower women through such a vulnerable time.

That belief inspired her to found The Babes Project, a not-for-profit crisis pregnancy service providing free, holistic and nurturing perinatal support to women doing it tough.

Since 2009, The Babes Project has grown to support hundreds of women every year, offering the support they need through crisis, and building confidence and empowerment in their motherhood.

And as CEO, Helen remains determined to ensure all women have support in their pregnancy and early parenting, and to change how our society values all mothers.

In 2018, The Babes Project expanded its operations beyond Melbourne’s south and eastern suburbs, taking its successful model national, via The Babes Project App, and the National Triage hotline, delivering on-phone support, advice and recommendations that replicates Babes’ proven perinatal program.

Helen is a compelling speaker, engaging her audiences in stories of risk, pioneering and making a dream reality.

Her message is one of possibility and potential, and how small changes made with love and compassion can transform lives, communities, and our world.
