Women, Dreamers & Ireland’s Rising
This event celebrates the poets, playwrights, musicians and dreamers – many of them women – who paved the way for an Irish Republic by inspiring, taking part in or responding to the 1916 armed insurrection against British rule in Ireland. Their involvement with and response to this cause, through their courage, passion and art, paved the way for Irish independence.
The importance of Australian connections to this event will be highlighted through informative discussion, musical contributions and a rehearsed reading of a new Australian play by Maeliosa Stafford and members of O’Punksky’s Theatre Company. Thanks to the generous support of Ireland’s TG4, there will be screenings of very informative documentaries about the Rising (including "Cumann na mBan and Mná na Réabhlóide"), with particular focus on women’s contribution. A diverse range of vocal and instrumental music by artists, including Folklore and Freddie White, will be offered, along with informative interviews and poetry readings.
There will be a focus on the Irish language and opportunities to learn about its pivotal importance to the dreamers who instigated the Rising and their legacy in shaping the Irish Republic of 2016. A pop up performance of Seán O’Casey’s famous bar scene from his Rising-themed play ‘The Plough & the Stars’ will be featured, as well as rehearsed readings of dramas by W B Yeats & Brendan Behan. Children will be catered for with a room dedicated to craft, story telling & musical entertainment, as well as a screening of ‘Amhran na Mara (the award winning Irish language film, ‘Song of the Sea’).
