Event description

Description

A Midwifery Study Day hosted by Wise Choices for Life. A unique opportunity for midwives to learn and earn 6 CPD points, while helping prevent maternal deaths in Africa. All proceeds from the day will fund training kids used in WCFL interactive 'train the trainer' workshops on basic midwifery and reproductive health throughout East Africa. Morning tea and lunch will be provided on the day.

'A simplified approach to positioning and attachment' - Heather Harris. BN (Deakin) and MMid (Latrobe), IBCLC.

Heather has worked as a midwife for over 40 years, she has held a number of hospital CMC LC positions, and has her own home visiting Postnatal service dealing predominantly with breast-feeding issues. Between 2001-2012 Heather worked as a midwife manager with MSF in a number of resource poor settings around the world. She developed the HOT program, and has made three educational breast-feeding videos.

'Impact, treatment and prevention of tropical disease in pregnancy' - Dorinda Edwards. RN/RM, Dip Tropical Nursing.

Dorinda has worked in the Horn of Africa as a midwife and nurse for 12 years. The first 8 years were spent running a busy rural health centre, which had limited supplies and resources but many babies born! She then focused her energy in travelling to remote communities around the countryside and has been involved in various community health programs, with a focus on preventing maternal mortality.

'Preparation and care of the perineum' - Katherine Callinan-Moore. B.App.Sci(Physio).

Kath has been a women’s health physiotherapist for the past 30 years and works primarily at Fitwise Physiotherapy in inner Melbourne. Her clinical scope includes management of pelvic floor dysfunction, musculoskeletal conditions of pregnancy and the postnatal period, childbirth education and lymphoedema management. She works 3 mornings a week in the postnatal ward of a private maternity unit and has a particular interest in maternal physical recovery through the puerperium.

'Tailor-made Contraception: What's best for who and when' - Dr Janice Kreltszheim. MBBS (Hons), FRACGP, DRANZCOG. Cert in Family Planning, Skin Cancer Medicine and Skin Cancer Therapeutics.

Dr Janice Kreltszheim has been in General Practice for 25 years, and while she delights in seeing people of all ages and stages, she is particularly interested in Women's Health including family planning, antenatal care and menopause management. She believes that better sexual and reproductive health is essential for communities to thrive all over the world, from modern Melbourne to deepest, darkest Africa!

'Repair or prepare, reducing obstetric fistula in East Africa' - Marg Docking. RN/RM, Grad Cert VET, Comprehensive Sexual Health and Family Planning.

Working in indigenous and rural settings across Austraia and then Uganda. "Preventing obstetric fistula has got to start with reaching influential male community leaders with basic midwifery. To save the women we need to reach the men." Marg is the founder of Wise Choices for Life.

'An osteopathic treatment approach to musculoskeletal pain in pregnancy' - Miranda Cox. B.App Sci (ClinSc) Osteopathic Science.

Miranda has worked for over 20 years in multidisciplinary clinics in Australia, UK and Ireland following her graduation from RMIT. As a mother of three, she is passionate about paediatric and women's health to support families, this is what drove her to establish osteo4kids&adults in 2003.
