Description

One Heart is delighted to host

Wisdom of Mindfulness in the World:
Conscience, Empowerment, Action -
Reclaiming Freedom and Authenticity -
The Totality of Everyday Life

with Alan Clements

A Talk: Friday May 19 7.00-9.00 pm

One Day Workshop: Sunday May 21 10.00am-4.00 pm

“You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be. And one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid….You refuse to do it because you want to live longer….You’re afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity or you’re afraid that somebody will stab you, or shoot at you or bomb your house; so you refuse to take the stand. Well, you may go on and live until you are 90, but you’re just as dead at 38 as you would be at 90. And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

Alan Clements is a former Buddhist monk who trained with the mindfulness meditation masters Mahasi Sayadaw and Sayadaw U Pandita in Burma for many years. He is an author and insight meditation and mindfulness teacher who focuses his presentations on those who wish to live a more conscious, mindful and passionate life in the world.

As a long time yoga practitioner, human rights activist, and creative stage artist, he connects yoga, activism and art with the timeless practices of meditation and mindfulness and calls it World Dharma and Inner Dharma Yoga. Alan leads workshops, retreats and mindful intelligence trainings in Canada, Burma, the US, and Australia.

Alan is also a political and spiritual satirist, and performs his one person show “Spiritually Incorrect” to audiences around the world as benefits to raise awareness of global human rights and to highlight the plight of political prisoners worldwide. His books, CDs and films include Instinct for Freedom, A Future to Believe In: Empowerment, Revolution and The Right To Be Free, The Dharma Beyond Buddhism, Spiritually Incorrect: Authoritarianism, Authenticity and Activism, and The Voice of Hope: Alan Clements in Conversation with Burma's Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

“Alan’s life is material for a legend. An intellectual artist, freedom fighter, former Buddhist monk, he shares his insights and experience with a passion rarely seen and even more rarely lived. He’ll make you think and feel in ways that challenge your entire way of being.”

— Catherine Ingram, In the Footsteps of Gandhi and Passionate Presence

The Workshop

The workshop is grounded in the practices of insight meditation, experiential Buddhist Psychology and what Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma calls, "The Courage to Care" or "A Revolution of the Spirit" common to all people beyond religion, philosophy, and beliefs.

During the day we will explore Mindful intelligence - the fusion of ethical, emotional, and spiritual intelligence. We invite old and new friends - the yoga-dharma Sangha - to join us in this special day of sacred communion, joining together to explore a new edge of transformation, to embody a more elevated expression of freedom, love and compassion and an end to all forms of violence.

The workshop will include:

  • group meditation with instructions to practice awareness-based mindfulness meditation
  • teachings with instructions in “sustained mindfulness” in all postures — sitting, walking, eating, etc
  • group discussions with Q & A and dialogue to explore how to make our lives a vehicle for awakening
  • foundational instructions and practices for classical (process-oriented) Buddhist Psychology
  • creative writing (self-life) explorations (bring a notebook)
  • reflections and processes that evolve clarity of purpose and meaningful actions in the world
  • guided meditation fostering specific states of consciousness, such as compassion, love and empathy
