Event description

Description

The Wisconsin Tree Farm Committee invites you to attend their 2018 Annual Field Day hosted by landowners Dale and Cathy Paulson of Herbster, Bayfield County, Wisconsin.

Dale and Cathy Paulson are the 2017 Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year, as awarded by the Wisconsin Tree Farm Committee. They are true do-it-yourselfers with a strong connection to the land. The Paulson’s use their 131 acre tree farm to harvest saw logs and pulpwood, protect a trout stream, hunt, make maple syrup, keep bees, garden, and create works of art.

The walking field tour of Dale and Cathy's property will take you on a journey from young forest habitat, to regenerating woodlands, to later successional forest along a trout stream. Also visit Dale’s woodworking shop to view the art he has created using wood products from his land.

We will gather for the event at the Town of Bell Community Center in Cornucopia, Wisconsin. Attendees will be bused to and from the Paulson property for the walking field tour. At the Community Center, attendees will also have the chance to visit displays by local natural resource organizations and nonprofits, and participate in a silent auction to benefit the Wisconsin Tree Farm program.

During the walking tour we will be outside for about 3 hours. Some of the terrain will be uneven. Please dress appropriately, including sturdy walking or hiking shoes. Bring a walking stick if desired. The temperature can also change rapidly as we're close to the lake, so plan to bring a light jacket.

Registration for this event is required. The registration fee covers lunch and refreshments, bus transportation to and from the Community Center to the field tour site, and a field tour booklet. The fee to attend is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Children 14 and under are free.

Join us on August 11, 2018 to see this special example of land stewardship in the Northwoods.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Attendees will gather and sign-in at the Town of Bell Community Center in Cornucopia, Wisconsin. We will then bus attendees to and from the property for the walking tour, which is about 20 minutes away.

What should I bring into the event?

This is a walking tour and a significant amount of time will be spent outside. Some of the terrain will be uneven. Please dress appropriately, including sturdy walking or hiking shoes. Bring a walking stick if desired. The temperature can also change rapidly so plan to bring a light jacket. Sunscreen and bug spray is also recommended. You may also choose to bring a small backpack with snacks and water. We will have some snacks and beverages available during the tour, and lunch will be served after the tour when we arrive back at the Community Center.

Can I bring my children to the event?

We welcome children and families to this event. There is no registration fee for children 14 or under. However, keep in mind that we will be outside on the walking tour for about 3 hours. The tour also includes presentations by adult natural resource professionals. Use your best judgement for bringing very young children who may or may not have the attention span for this type of event.
