ABOUT THE WILLIAMSTOWN ITALIAN SOCIAL CLUB

The Italian community has helped shape industry across Melbourne’s west for generations. Post war migration saw areas like Werribee, Spotswood, Newport, and Kingsville benefit from hard working Italian families.

Today ancestors of those migrant workers gather at the Williamstown Italian Social Club to enjoy meals, play bocce and listen to live music.

The Club, which was established in 1970's is located on the site of the former Empress Pavilion, which was later converted to the New Empress Theatre, then becoming a Roller-Skating Rink and after that a Table Tennis Centre.

The social club, which is 100 metres from Williamstown beach, fosters community togetherness between its members and their families through social, cultural and recreational activities.

We look forward to welcoming you on the day.

WILLIAMSTOWN ITALIAN SOCIAL CLUB

The site of the Williamstown Italian Social Club - WISC was once home to The Empress Open-Air Pavilion, opening in 1907.

In 1953, a new brick facade was added and it became the New Empress Theatre, reopening with Marilyn Monroe in "River of No Return".

The New Empress Theatre was closed in 1960. Later it became a roller skating rink, then a table tennis centre.

In 1978 it was purchased by the Williamstown Italian Social Club, and remains home to the WISC today.

The Williamstown Italian Social Club - WISC was originally set up for the Italian community that migrated to Williamstown and surrounding suburbs.

On weekends families would meet at local parks for social gatherings and book halls to house their Dinners Dances. They needed a permanent meeting place.

The opportunity came in 1978 for 200 families to purchase the former New Empress Theatre building from the council.

Back in the day every Sunday was family day. The men played Bocce, the women would cook, and the children would play in the park or go to the beach. In the 1990s the club was incorporated. This allowed the club to open to new members that wanted to enjoy and embrace the Italian culture.

It is important to Williamstown Italian Social Club- WISC, its committee & members  & community  to carry on this tradition and to have a meeting place which is a true Taste of Italy in our backyards....

We invite you to become a member of the Williamstown Italian Social Club at this very special event.
