Event description

Description

Join Ian Jenkin of the Australian Railway Historical Society (Victorian Division) to discover more about the important story of Newport and Williamstown in the creation of the Victorian railways. On a cold and wet 25 June 1857; the first train arrived at Greenwich (Newport) marking the beginning of the association of the area with the railway. By 1859, a railway workshop was established at Williamstown; later, in 1888, the workshops transferred to Newport. In spite of many changes to the Public Transport system, the area continues to play a pivotal role to railway operations throughout Victoria. The talk will be followed by an optional visit to Newport Railway Museum
