Description

Why We Should Still be Reading Austen

With Susannah Fullerton

Jane Austen died on 18 July 1817 and was buried in Winchester Cathedral a few days later without any great fanfare. Her gravestone mentioned her piety, sweet nature, and how loved she was by friends and relations, but failed to mention the six novels that have made her famous around the world. Two hundred years later Austen is one of the most famed novelists of all time. Why have her books lasted so well? What has made them so popular?

Susannah Fullerton, President of the Jane Austen Society of Australia, discusses the endless appeal of Jane Austen and her new memoir, Jane & I: A Tale of Austen Addiction.
