Course overview

This training is essential for staff/volunteers to meet two of the four Commonwealth Home Services Programme (CHSP) training requirements: Manual Handling & WHS.

Covering the theoretical basics and responsibilities under WHS ACT 2011 (NSW), this workshop develops participant’s skills in practical application of hazard identification, risk assessment and control in the workplace. The experienced trainer creates an interactive and engaging environment so that participants take ownership of the content.

Topics covered

Work Health And Safety (WHS)

  • WHS legal responsibilities of officers, workers, volunteers and others
  • Importance of WHS consultation
  • Defining hazard and risk in the workplace
  • Effectively assessing common hazards and determining how to eliminate or control the risk
  • Understanding what to do in an emergency

Manual Handling

  • What is manual handling?
  • Anatomy, biomechanics including posture and ergonomic principles
  • How manual handling injuries occur
  • Identifying, assessing and controlling manual handling risks
  • Practically applying safe manual handling techniques

Who should participate?

This training is essential for staff and volunteers working in Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) / Disability funded services to meet two of the four CHSP requirements.

  About the facilitator

Doron Blaikie has over 9 years experience providing workplace rehabilitation and injury prevention services under the WorkCover NSW and Comcare schemes, and as part of Early Intervention programs. He has worked with customers across a wide range of industries including the government sector, manufacturing, retail, corporate, transport, construction, education, and labour hire.

Since joining Recovre, Doron has been delivering a range of services including Workplace Rehabilitation, Ergonomic Assessment, Functional Capacity Evaluation, and Manual Handling Training. Doron’s well-developed communication skills and empathetic approach, enable him to deliver an excellent service to our clients.

Doron’s professional qualifications in Physiotherapy and Ergonomics provides him with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to undertake this role and to be a valuable member of the team. Prior to joining Recovre, Doron worked has worked in Work Health and Safety consulting and a broad range of settings within the healthcare sector, including workplace rehabilitation and the hospital environment.

The Junction Neighbourhood Centre (JNC) provides a diverse range of services and support to disadvantaged groups across local government areas in Bondi Junction (Waverley), Randwick and Maroubra. Operating for 40 years, JNC has continuously strived to provide responsive and meaningful services to meet identified community needs and seek to develop community participation in the development of these services.

As a basic introduction, The Junction Neighbourhood Centre Inc. is a not for profit organisation resourced through government funding from Department of Social Services, NSW Family and Community Services, local government, community grants, donation, and some sponsorship.

We provide specialist services for familiesolder people, people with disabilities and their carers; facilitate the recruitment, training and referral of volunteers for Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) in the City of Sydney and eastern suburbs; work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Randwick LGA, run social inclusion groups & classes for people who are socially isolated; and organise practical assistance with outreach services including financial counselling, tax help etc.
