Event description

Description

Ever wondered who used to live in your house or the one next door and what businesses operated in your neighbourhood a century ago?

The Sands and McDougall directories are a key resource for researching the history of Melbourne and Victorian properties, residents, businesses and streets.

Max Nankervis from the Middle Park History Group will introduce you to an effective method for using the Sands and McDougall Street Directory, 1857-1974, enabling you to get to know something not only of the history of your own house, but your wider neighbourhood - be it your street block, your street or a whole neighbourhood area.

Beginners are welcome. Participants will be able to carry out this research method independently or with a group. The method requires access to a computer and very basic skills with an excel spread sheet. Take away information guides will be available.
