Event description
Where Will All The Trees Be? – national canopy benchmarking research, 2020

About this Event

Funded by Hort Innovation, Greener Spaces Better Places has been working with researchers at RMIT & The CAUL Hub to identify trends and insight within seven years’ worth of i-Tree data, broken down by local government areas.

For the first time, however, we also have matching pairs of data that tell us with more accuracy the nature of change of specific points, for example from a hard surface to a green one, or a tree to a road.

This webinar is the first in an interactive series, where you’ll get to ask questions of our expert researchers, learn from peer practitioners and contribute your own ideas and learning.

This first presentation focuses specifically on the results of national i-Tree report. While we appreciate the limitations of i-Tree methodology, we’ve also uncovered some valuable insights and overall trends bought about by seeing the results of a broad-based and longitudinal data set.

We have:

  • Categorised each LGA into a ‘type’ - ‘Sprawling & Spacious’, ‘Spacious & Urban’ and ‘Urban and Compact’ and then further drilled down to compare these areas by amount of rainfall received.
  • These ‘like-to-like’ comparisons reveal positive and negative changes in green cover (shrub and tree canopy) across Australian urban LGAs
  • Identified local government areas who are ‘bucking the trend’ when it comes to securing a pipeline of green cover amid density and population increases, as well as those most at risk.

By attending this webinar, you will have the opportunity to hear directly from our researchers on the latest findings as well as hear from green space professionals who are overcoming challenges to keep and/or increase their green cover levels.

This conversation is part of one that we’re leading among the broader public about what urban green cover targets actually look like, and what can be achieved when we embark upon targeted, sustained and meaningful green cover programs over time.
