Event description

Description

Our National Science Week special guest speaker, Dr Lisa Harvey-Smith, describes the cataclysmic events that can occur when galaxies collide, including radiant bursts of star formation, coalescence of supermassive black holes and the ignition of dragon-like active galactic nuclei launching jets of gas through space at almost the speed of light. She also explains how a collision between our own galaxy, the Milky Way, and its neighbour will bring dramatic changes to our night sky. But don't worry - it's not happening for at least 4 billion years!

Dr Lisa Harvey-Smith is an astrophysicist who has worked at world-class astronomical observatories in the UK, Germany, The Netherlands and Australia. Lisa was a member of the team that delivered Australia’s successful bid to host the world’s largest radio telescope - the Square Kilometre Array. Her role as the project scientist for ASKAP, the innovative $188m precursor to the SKA, places her at the cutting-edge of technology development for radio astronomy. Lisa is a highly experienced speaker who last year introduced the Emmy-winning astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and astronaut Buzz Aldrin at sold-out live shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

Lisa's presentation is guaranteed to be fun and spectacular!
