Speakers - Leanne Kelly (Deakin University) with Peter Simmons (GraceWorks Myanmar) and Ben & Irene Hay (Children’s Fortress, Kenya)

Non-profit organisations are experiencing increasing expectations to thoroughly evaluate their programs and projects. There is an emphasis on interventions being ‘evidence-based’ and offering ‘value for money’. But what sorts of challenges do these evaluations present for small international and community development non-profit organisations? Who are the evaluations for? How are they used? This seminar discusses research findings which reveal that top-down, donor mandated evaluations present a host of challenges for small non-profits, and result in expensive reports that are under-utilised by the organisations. This raises a question about how small non-profits check effectiveness, improve programs and projects, and remain accountable to their donors and recipients in ways that are meaningful and useful to the organisations themselves. This seminar explores options and alternatives developed out of recent field research.
