What's below the tide? A coastal exploration at Clovelly!
Event Information
About this Event
Who doesn't love finding fun critters in the tidal shallows? Ever wonder what's the scientific name of 'that starfish' you found? Want to learn about the life of a marine biologist? Bring yourself, your kids, and your inner child to our coastal exploration in Clovelly!
We are back and ready to explore the beautiful and diverse habitats in Sydney with you. This coastal walk will be guided by marine biologists from University of New South Wales in which you will discover and learn about the beautiful marine critters in Clovelly and/or Gordon's Bay.
Our representatives, in our blue tees and with a large banner, will meet you at 2pm at Bundock Park Playground, adjacent to Clovelly Beach. We will then head to rock platforms of Clovelly during low tide and explore the marine life in the intertidal zone and the different coastal habitats where they can be found. Expect to see sea stars, sponges, sea snails, seaweeds, barnacles, bivalves, urchins, crabs, prawns, fishes and many more! You will also have the opportunity to touch and hold non- venomous organisms.
Snap all the photos of the marine critters that you have discovered, for you can be a citizen scientist! We will also introduce you to iNaturalist, a free and social-networking platform that allows you to identify the marine (and terrestial) organisms with just your mobile phone snaps. You can contribute to citizen science by uploading these photos on the platform and benefit from species identification, sometimes within seconds, from scientists worldwide. Feel free to install the iNaturalist app on your mobile phone prior to the exploration from either Google Play or Apple App Store.
Don't be tardy for the discovery of the myriad of marine critters! Sign-up quickly as the numbedr of participants will be limited to 15 pax for this exploration. Families with children of 3 years of age and older are welcome. We look forward to exploring the intertidal zone with you and showing the amazing marine biodiversity in Sydney.
