Know the steps in getting a literary agent to represent you and your work.

What should you expect with you finally get an agent? Justine Barker, Agent at Mayfair Literary Agency, will take you through the role of a literary agent, and hints and tips on getting one.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this seminar, you will have detailed answers to the following questions:

  • What does an agent do?

  • What are the different types of agents and agencies?

  • Why have an agent? (what can an agent really do for you?)

  • Are you ready for an agent?

  • How does an agent get paid?

  • What is the process once your book is accepted by an agent?

  • Finally, how do you land an agent?

About Justine Barker

Justine Barker is a literary agent at Mayfair Literary Agency. Her clients include Michelle Worthington and Mike Lucas. Justine has had a passion for books since early childhood. Justine worked in local government since 2011 where she has been a commercial lawyer and contracts advisor in the procurement department (e.g. drafting, negotiating and advising on large commercial contracts). In her free time, Justine loves to read, laugh at her ridiculously terrible cooking and spend time with her husband and two young children.


Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Unless otherwise stated, Queensland Writers Centre workshops and events are suitable for participants aged 16 years and over. If you are under 18 years of age, please check with us for suitability before purchasing a ticket.

Membership and concession tickets will be confirmed on arrival.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.

Will this event be livestreamed?

Queensland Writers Centre aims to provide material to its members regardless of where they reside within Queensland by livestreaming some events. Attendees may be broadcast periodically throughout the event as recording takes place. If you wish not to be filmed, let staff know prior to the event.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
