Event description

Description

Join Dr Chelsea Barnett as she explores understandings of masculinity as they were constituted and represented by Australian films from 1949 to 1962. While an understanding of the suburban male breadwinner remains synonymous with 'the fifties' in popular culture and political rhetoric, Chelsea argues that the cultural landscape of the fifties actively created and negotiated between multiple understandings of culturally legitimate masculinity. These masculinities often circulated around postwar class distinctions: middle-class, Menziean masculinity was caught in contest with a radical nationalist masculinity associated with the working class.

Hosted by Lake Mac Libraries.

Proudly presented as part of the History Council of NSW’s Speaker Connect program for History Week 2017, supported by Create NSW.
