Description

What do examiners (really) want?

How can you know that you’ve done enough work and your thesis is ready to submit? The process and decisions around examination can seem rather mysterious. In this workshop we unpack the ANU regulations around examination. Then we explore how examiners approach their task and identify what they are looking for when deciding whether a thesis is good enough to award the degree. Understanding examiner expectations can help you prepare your thesis to meet the required standards.

By the end of this workshop you will:

  • Have a better understanding of the examination process
  • Know what the 'pain points' for examiners are and how to plan for them in the way you write your thesis

This workshop will be presented by Dr Cally Guerin, a Researcher Developer in the Researcher Development Unit at The Australian National University. She has worked in researcher education since 2008. Her research interests include research writing, academic identities, the academic workforce, and doctoral education. She is a founding co-editor of the DoctoralWriting blog. Cally is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (now known as Advance HE). You can read more about her research on ORCiD and here, and follow her on Twitter @CallyGuerin.
