Event description

Description

The library, together with experts from the Multisensory Communication team at the MARCS Institute, Western Sydney University (WSU), present a series of 3 practical talks for older people.

Join discussions about refining non-verbal communication skills, and learn strategies to manage the impact of ageing on brain function and hearing. Find out how to enhance communication in noisy situations, and hear experts outline the latest research findings.

At this first event in the series during NSW Seniors Festival, Professor Chris Davis explores old age, patterns of change, and staying connected. He’ll discuss the effects of ageing on individual thinking skills and the importance of communicating and being social. Find out if there’s a ‘magic bullet’ for staying sharp and what’s being done to combat ageism and negative views of the elderly.

Professor Chris Davis

Graduating from Monash University, Chris got his postdoctoral fellowship in Madrid, before joining the Psychology Department at The University of Melbourne. Joining The MARCS Institute at WSU in 2006, he studies multisensory communication and is the leader of the International Auditory-visual Speech Association. His focus is on speech perception difficulties that challenging listening situations present for older adults. The Multisensory Communication research program Western Sydney University’s MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, investigates how information from our senses contributes to communication. Studying how sensorial information is combined, represented and actioned, they aim to make speech perception more robust. This free event is suitable for seniors, their carers and relatives. Bookings are recommended.
