Description

Want to see the amazing film 'Westwind: Djalu's Legacy' AND contribute towards a great cause? Then this is the event for you.

By coming along, you will help support the travel of Indigenous community members to attend the 'Indigenous Data Sovereignty Symposium 2017' (IDSS17) in Melbourne (11-12 October). The IDSS17 is hosted by Professor Marcia Langton (UoM) and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). IDSS17 will bring together Indigenous people from across the nation to discuss and plan the future roadmap of Indigenous Data Sovereignty in Australia.

More and more we are hearing about the benefits and dangers of data for individuals and society, but what does this mean for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? For good reason, Indigenous data sovereignty is an area of growing attention and it's all about making sure that data for and about Indigenous peoples are used to advance Indigenous aspirations for collective and individual well-being.

Key to the success of IDSS17 is the attendance & participation of Indigenous community members. So the central goal of this fundraiser is to cover the travel costs of as many community members to attend the symposium as possible. We are very excited to be hosting leaders of local Indigenous data sovereignty from Indigenous community groups from across Australia. Some of these include:

• Kaiela Institute’s Algabonyah Data Unit (Shepparton, Victoria)
• Wadeye Museum Project (Wadeye, NT)
• Justice Reinvestment (Bourke, NSW)
• Urban Indigenous Health Institute (Brisbane, QLD)
• Kimberley Institute, Yawuru Project (Broome, WA)
• Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women's Council (Central Australia tri-state region WA, SA & NT)
• Wunan Foundation (East Kimberley, WA)
• Ngoonbi Community Services Indigenous Corporation (Kuranda, QLD)
• Miwatj Community Health Aboriginal Corporation (Yirrkala, NT)
• Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service (Narrabundah, ACT)

We know that to Close The Gap of Indigenous disadvantage, we need access to more data that is relevant and of high quality. Such data would provide the evidence-base for the development and rollout of policy solutions at local, state/territory and national levels. IDSS17 will provide a platform for the voices of those already engaging in their own data creation and management to tell their stories of frustration and success in this new world of data, big and small, and plan for better futures for themselves, their communities and future generations.

ABOUT THE FILM: 'Westwind' tells the story of Yidaki (aka Didgeridoo) master Djalu Gurruwiwi and his attempt to pass on sacred Songlines to the next generation: http://www.madmanfilms.com.au/westwind-djalus-legacy/

Also, if you'd like to buy a ticket for a community member to attend the film night, please purchase a 'PAY IT FORWARD' ticket.
