Well, well, WELL, what have we here?

There is an industry-wide buzz about employee health & wellbeing in the property industry. Leaders in this space have been pursuing this agenda for some time and much research has been undertaken that supports the argument that buildings have a considerable impact on stress, physical health and mental wellbeing. Health and wellbeing initiatives have the value potential of attracting, and more importantly, retaining top talent and premium occupiers in the industry.

In this CIBSE NSW session, our speakers will discuss the WELL Building Standard in the context of the commercial property landscape plus several projects targeting WELL Certification and how this has influenced the designs in each case.

Emma McMahon (CBRE) will share some of CBRE’s insights into this trend – why it’s important, who values it and what’s next for wellness in the built environment.

Andreas Moelsted (Steensen Varming) will discuss a current WELL certification for a new laboratory building. Health and wellbeing has always been central to good environmental and building services design, however some concepts like thermal comfort and indoor air quality can be quite abstract for those outside of our industry. WELL ratings bring some of these issues into focus, but like any rating tool, can often introduce unexpected constraints and limits on design solutions. Andreas will share his recent experience of how WELL certification impacted the services design of the building.

Tony Short (Charter Hall) will discuss WELL certification for two of Charter Hall's own office fitouts. Providing a future focussed workplace solution is an ongoing journey addressing not only the physical and technical elements but also employee health and wellbeing. There is overwhelming evidence on the benefits of a healthy workplace and the WELL Building Standard shows how design, operations and behaviours can be improved to support employee wellbeing. Tony will share some of the learnings of Charter Hall in adopting the WELL Building Standard including the challenges faced when applied late in the design phase.

emEmma McMahon is responsible for the overall management, analysis and reporting on all aspects of a key portfolio’s energy and environmental related services. She is also responsible for the measurement, monitoring and reporting on CBRE’s own environmental footprint and performance to meet CBRE’s Carbon Neutral status.

Passionate about the health and wellbeing of building occupants, Emma is a member of IWBI’s WELL Faculty and chairs CBRE’s APAC Wellness Working Group in addition to providing consulting services to various building owners, developers and tenants on the WELL Building Standard.

Andreas Moelsted is a mechanical engineer at Steensen Varming.  With a Bachelor Degree in Building Design Andreasfrom Aarhus Engineering College, and then a Masters in Building Energy Design from the University of Aalborg, Andreas’ Scandinavian education has always had a keen focus on energy, human comfort and indoor air quality.  He has extended this knowledge across the commercial, healthcare, residential, education and infrastructure sectors, and applies the Steensen Varming Danish design-led principles to his project work in Australia and in Europe.

Andreas’ passion is in optimising the link between early design stages, overall building sustainability and the impact of these on the building’s mechanical design to deliver exceptional human environments.

TonyTony Short's background is Project Management with more than 12 years’ experience delivering workplace solutions including Activity Based Working and flexible work environments. Tony is responsible for the delivery of Charter Hall's workplaces in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth which includes program management, integration of ABW principals, application of WELL Building Standards, ongoing enhancements and post delivery support.
