Webinar on Effective Disaster Waste Management for Local Governments
Overview
Join your MWA colleagues for an exclusive webinar on disaster waste management for local governments, featuring a practical Australian case study (developed with Tonkin + Taylor).
Webinar Overview
Local governments are increasingly facing floods, storms and bushfires that generate large, complex waste streams and create significant risks to human health, the environment and community recovery. This session explores how councils can apply the PPRR (Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery) framework to plan for, respond to and recover from disaster waste events.
Using Wollondilly Shire Council as a real-world example, the webinar will cover how to translate state-level policy into actionable local processes, identify priority waste risks, and establish scalable arrangements that can be deployed quickly when disaster strikes.
What you’ll learn
Apply the PPRR framework to disaster waste planning and operations in a council context
Align local planning with the NSW Disaster Waste Sub-Plan and relevant emergency management requirements
Use risk assessment and stakeholder workshops to identify likely waste streams and practical mitigations
Implement operational tools such as pre-identified temporary waste storage sites, service provider networks and event checklists
Embed continuous improvement through post-event debriefing and plan updates, including cultural considerations
Who should attend
Waste and resource recovery teams, emergency management staff, operational works managers, environment and sustainability officers, and contractors supporting council disaster response.
