Share Webinar: Managed Funds

Event Details

Rather leave the stock picking to the experts? Then managed funds can be an effective way to enter the world of share investing.

In a managed fund, your investment is pooled with other investors’ and run by fund managers who make the decisions on what and when to buy and sell.

Following on from the popular ‘Investing in Shares’ (inc link) webinar last month, we’ve invited Greg Hoffman back to introduce us to the world of managed funds. This hour long online workshop will cover:

  • How do the fees work and what exactly are you paying for?
  • The benefits of diversification
  • How to screen fund managers and compare returns
  • Have ethical concerns? How to find a fund to fit your philosophy
  • How to get in and out
  • Keeping records

This time there’s a little homework to do beforehand to help you get the most out of the session. It’s not compulsory of course, but if you’ve got the time, give it a go!

1. In a world of low interest rates, imagine that the sharemarket will return 6% per annum over the next decade and that most large share funds simply match that figure before taking their fees.

    a) What proportion of your returns will a manager charging an annual fee of 1% be taking?

    b) What proportion of your returns will a manager charging an annual fee of 2% be taking?

2. The Perpetual Industrial Share Fund is a large, well-established Australian Shares fund. Research this fund.

   a) Where did you go to research the fund?

   b) List 3 good points in your opinion

   c) List 3 negative points in your opinion

   d) Is there any information you wanted to know but could not find out?

   e) If you were looking for an Australian Shares Fund, how likely would you be from 1 (very unlikely) to    5 (very likely) to invest in this fund?

Suggest a question on our Facebook Forum Discussion Thread and we'll ask them online in this live Q&A on the 25 October 2016 at 12:30pm (SYD/MELB TIME).

Then tune in here for the answer!
