 Wave Smart: Two-Day Survival Course

You will learn:

  • How to identify rips and currents;
  • Recognise safe and unsafe swimming areas;
  • Deep water flotation techniques;
  • Skills in correct board paddling; and
  • Rescue techniques and CPR procedures.

Thursday 21 December and Friday 22 December, 9am-3pm

Meet at 69 The Mall, Bankstown, at 8:45am

Bus departs at 9am sharp

**This course is for young people aged 12-18 years

The Surf Survival Course is designed for High School aged students and is based on lessons in which students learn from both theory and hands-on components. On completion, the students will be issued with a Ocean Safety Surfer Award certificate from the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguards Association, which is recognised by the New South Wales Department of Education. Students are required to swim 200m in 5 minutes at the beginning of the course to satisfy legal and safety requirements.

Theory:             - identify potential dangers

                         - safe/non-safe swimming areas

                         - rip/current identification

                         - wave types and how they are formed

                         - emergency response procedures

Hands-on:       - swimming and treading water

- correct board paddling techniques

- performing board rescues with conscious/unconscious patient

- beach walk identifying dangers

- emergency response procedures

- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R) on manikins

Instructors-     All instructors are lifeguards employed by Sutherland Shire Council who have had child protection screening and have extensive knowledge of surf safety. 

Resources -    The course utilises the beach at North Cronulla including the rock pools. The  resources used include a Surf Education manual and DVD, foam surfboards and resuscitation manikins supplied by council.
