Event Details

Unprecedented and accelerating impacts of global warming are increasingly evident in the world's polar regions.  The 2005 documentary 'Chasing Ice' follows the efforts of former climate change skeptic James Balog to capture a multi-year photogaphic record of the Arctic's shrinking glaciers.

This event allows you to view the stunning footage on a big screen.  You also get the chance to sample ice-themed baked goods (for a gold coin donation), the chance to buy a penguin LEGO kit available nowhere else, and the chance to meet women soon to voyage to Antarctica to see the melting ice for themselves!

Proceeds from this event support the participation of local women scientists in a voyage to Antarctica as part of Homeward Bound.  Homeward Bound aims to build a global community of 1000 women in science, and equip us with state of the art leadership skills to combat climate change.  Each participant must raise ~$25,000 to pay for the voyage.

Organiser

Marji Puotinen

Marji is a scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science.  She aims to understand the impacts of disturbances on marine environments, especially cyclone wave damage to coral reefs.  She is also striving to get kids talking about climate change through her outreach program, which asks them 'What do penguins and coral reefs have in common?'. She has recently joined an international leadership program for women in science (Homeward Bound) which culminates in a journey to Antarctica in January 2019. All participants must pay for the Antarctica journey - here's how you can help!
