About this event
Chinese people have been a significant part of the Ballarat community since the Gold Rush. While their numbers have varied, the Chinese have always been active members of the community.
This tour’s specific focus is the Chinese section of the Cemetery. It highlights the unique Chinese characteristic of its design and how it reflects a Chinese religious view of death in contrast to the cemetery’s dominant Christian perspective.
The tour will include a general introduction to the Cemetery and its history, the religious and social beliefs that informed its construction and development, and how this mirrors the Ballarat community.
Emphasis will be given to the restoration and reconsecration of the burial site that occurred in 1994 and the establishment of the Chinese garden and Moon Gate.
Consideration of contemporary attitudes of the Chinese community in Ballarat today to burials that, while having some traditional features also have new features, will conclude the tours.
The tour will start and finish at The Gatehouse Café, and runs for 2 hours. Hosted by Jim Quinn from the Ballarat China Community Committee.
Cost: Free, but bookings essential.
