Event description
Explore the history and heritage of Manuka

About this Event

Image: Griffin's Preliminary Plan, 1913. The 'Initial City' is the location of Manuka Centre.

Strictly speaking, Manuka is not a suburb of Canberra, but the name of the shopping area situated in the suburb of Griffith. It is one of the oldest shopping areas in Canberra, planned to meet the needs of the public servants arriving with the transfer of Government from Melbourne. It is an appropriate area for a Heritage Walk as there are several heritage-listed (or nominated) sites around Manuka. Many Canberrans will be familiar with the Manuka shops, the Manuka Oval, Telopea Park, Telopea Park School, churches and the Hotel Kingston. On this Walk we will learn more about the history of these places and some other less well-known ones such as Forrest Fire Station and the former Griffith Child Welfare Centre as well as ones which have been lost – the Canberra Services Club and the original Capitol Theatre.

The walk is all on footpaths through Telopea Park and beside roads around Manuka. We will cross Canberra Avenue twice at traffic lights.

Meet: Car park in Telopea Park near Currie Crescent (Kingston side of Telopea Park)

Walk Leaders: Mary Johnston, Richard Johnston and Nick Swain (Co-author of ‘Manuka: History and People 1924-2014’).

Bad weather:  Unless otherwise advised by email, the leader will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.

Note:  For the comfort and safety of other walkers, we do not allow dogs on our walks.

Audio tour guide system: we will be using our new audio tour guide system to help the hard of hearing and to assist in physical distancing. We have two types of earphones - one fits over the ear (not in) and the other over the head. You are welcome to bring your own earphones (with a normal phone jack ie not an Apple lightning connector). The receivers and earphone will be sanitised and you will also be asked to use hand sanitiser before use. The use of the system is optional.

COVID19 safety:  Please check the current ACT health guidelines on protecting yourself and others before booking on this walk.  Please note that you must cancel if you are unwell (a refund will be provided on request); you should maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres from other people during the walk and observe good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. If required, your contact details will be provided to health authorities.  Hand sanitiser will be available before and during the Walk.
