About this Event

PLEASE NOTE: To ensure suitable physical distancing, this Heritage Walk will be limited to 18 people on each Walk. The Walk will be conducted twice and you may choose which date you wish to attend - Sunday 25 October or Sunday 1 November. Both walks start at 9.30 am. See below for further information on safety in the COVID19 environment.

Garden City ideals guided the planning of this area and are expressed through its streetscapes. Ideas about structures of society are expressed through its built form.

Histories behind its features include traces of the aboriginal inhabitants of this land, of 18th century explorers, 19th century settlers and 20th century visionaries. Stories behind its early houses discover the realities, fortunes and fates of those who came to bring the new Federal Capital into being as a “start-up” of the city it now is. You may be surprised by some of these!

The walk will pass houses in every street with distinctive architectural styles from the earliest housing developments in Canberra. Garden settings are maintained as essential features, and Bass Gardens park is a focal point with mature trees, native grassland and its own stories.

Walter Burley Griffin saw this area below Red Hill as the “Initial City” of the capital, but somebody else had already set out the merits of this place. Other people played major parts in bringing about what is now here. Who were they all?

Walk leader: Brendan Preiss

The walk through made streets and over grass verges and parkland will take up to 2 hours, ending at The Lawns. Brendan has been a member of the Heritage Committee of the National Trust [ACT] and lives in Blandfordia 5 [where does that name come from…?].

Bad weather:  Unless otherwise advised by email, the leader will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.

Note:  For the comfort and safety of other walkers, we do not allow dogs on our walks.
